500 friends and supporters of the Actors' Playhouse gathered
at the Miracle Theatre Saturday evening for the 13th Annual
Reach for the Stars Gala Auction. Hosted by Chairman of
the Board Dr. Lawrence E. Stein and Executive Producing
Director Barbara S. Stein, the auction was held at the
restored Art Deco Miracle Theatre, located at 280 Miracle
Mile in Coral Gables. This year, more than $175,000, the
highest in the auction's history, was raised for their
endowment fund.
Highest auction bids included
a Mediterranean holiday aboard SeaDream Yacht Club,
4 day/3 night accommodations at worldwide Hotel Intercontinental
locations including China and Japan, a 7-day cruise
for two to Alaska, Bermuda, or the Caribbean on Norwegian
Cruise Line, two roundtrip business class tickets to
Europe from Lufthansa, and a Florida Marlins memorabilia
and VIP package.
Special guests at the auction
included Coral Gables Mayor Donald Slesnick and wife
Jeannett Slesnick, Azmat and Hina Syed of Lufthansa
Airlines, Phillis Oeters of Baptist Health South Florida,
Lourdes Rey-Wilson of TotalBank with husband Jeff, Rolando
Rodriguez of Jackson Memorial Foundation, Gabriella
Arango and Elena Iturriaga of Gabriella Arango Couture,
Ana Maria Davide of Davide Realty and husband Royal
Webster, Former mayor of Coral Gables Dorothy Thomson
and husband Jack, Thomas Jelke of T. Jelke Solutions,
Dr. Larry Kessler, Ricardo Gonzalez of Beaux Art Gallery,
and Billy the Marlin. Guest auctioneer was South Florida's
own Bob Soper of WFOR Channel 4 joined with announcer
David Arisco, Artistic Director for the theatre.
The auction was proceeded
by dinner provided by 27 local restaurants, including
Atlanta Bread Company, Bacardi USA, Inc., Brasserie
Les Halles, Cacao, Caf« Ibiza, Carmen the Restaurant,
Catering by Lovables, Christy's Restaurant, Chispa Restaurant,
Edda's Cake Designs, Izakaya Japanese Restaurant, Jamba
Juice, John Martin's Irish Pub & Restaurant, Le
Chocolatier Fine Chocolate, Los Ranchos CocoWalk, M&D
Bartenders, Norman Brothers Produce, Ortanique on the
Mile, Peppy's Gourmet Italian Restaurant, Premier Beverage
Co., Special Events Catering by Les, Starbucks Coffee,
Tambo, The Palm, Tropical Chinese Restaurant, Two Chefs,
and Two Sisters at the Hyatt.
Other donors this year
included British Airways, Alitalia, Atlantis in Paradise

Islands of the Bahamas, Hyatt Regency Coral Gables,
Biltmore Hotel, Copa Airlines, Continental Connection,
All Nippon Airways Ana Tours, Jamaica Tourist Board,
and others.
Actors' Playhouse at the
Miracle Theatre, a not-for-profit state regional
theatre, is located in Coral Gables and is one of 20
Major Miami-Dade County Cultural Institutions. Co-founded
by Chairman Dr. Lawrence E. Stein, Actors' Playhouse
is an award-winning professional company with an agreement
with Actors' Equity Association, New York. Executive
producing director is Barbara S. Stein, and artistic
director is David Arisco. Actors' Playhouse has produced
more than 90 Mainstage productions since 1988 and has
been awarded Carbonell Awards (the South Florida equivalent
of the Tony Award) for artistic excellence as Best
Production of a Musical for The Mystery
of Edwin Drood, West Side Story, Joseph
& the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, I Love
You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Violet
and Floyd Collins. The theatre
recently won eight 2003 Carbonell Awards for Floyd
Collins and The Big Bang and was
nominated for 26 for its productions of Floyd
Collins, Comic Potential, The Big Bang, Sherlock's
Last Case, and The Sound of Music.
Actors' Playhouse recently
announced a blockbuster 2004-05 season, including the nationally-noted,
interactive comedy Shear Madness in September,
followed by rare regional productions of Disney's Beauty
and the Beast, Elton John's and Tim Rice's Aida,
and the Alan Ayckbourn new and innovative inter-locking
House and Garden
plays. The summer 2005 production will be the Carbonell
Award winning musical comedy The Big Bang, returning
by popular demand.
Season subscriptions for
the blockbuster 2004-05 season are on sale now, with
prices ranging from $136 for preview nights, $198 for
Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday matinees,
$235 for Friday and Saturday evenings, and $250 for
VIP Flexible/Anytime tickets for best seats in any performance.
Opening night tickets, including a gala dinner party,
are $375. Student subscriptions for students 16 years
and younger with a full adult subscription are $95.
Actors' Playhouse subscribers
also receive generous membership benefits from Coral
Gables' finest restaurants and establishments, including
Christy's, Ortanique, Chispa, The Palm, Carmen's, Pescado,
