South Florida Business Journal Awards Barbara S. Stein
2006 Corporate Business Woman of the Year |
The
South Florida Business Journal named Barbara
S. Stein, Executive Producing Director of
Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre,
the 2006 Corporate Business Woman of the Year
at the Hyatt Regency Pier 66 on August 10,
2006. Chosen among women executives from Palm
Beach to Miami-Dade County, Barbara Stein
was acknowledged as co founder of Actors’
Playhouse in 1988 with husband Dr. Lawrence
E. Stein, and for her leadership and vision
in creating one of Florida’s eight major
professional theatres, the largest producing
company in the region, one of twenty-two major
cultural organizations in Miami-Dade County.
Actors’ Playhouse was recently recognized
and honored as a Florida Presenting Organization
by the Secretary of State.
Actors’
Playhouse was originally located in a Kendall
strip mall with a $250,000 budget. Now residing
as the resident company and managing agent
of the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables, the
501c3 non-profit organization has an annual
operating budget of $4,250,000. Stein’s
clear focus and vision for the company and
the integrity of the Miracle Theatre, helps
attract loyal supporters and donors. Working
with a dedicated and passionate artistic team,
Actors’ Playhouse partnered with the
City of Coral Gables in 1994 to develop the
historic Miracle Theatre into a state-of-the
arts performance center. Ten years later,
the three-stage facility operates year round
attracting 175,000 theatre patrons to Miracle
Mile. The restoration and renovation of the
Miracle Theatre was the catalyst in the revitalization
of downtown Coral Gables, a community with
leading restaurants, art galleries, and retail
boutiques. Stein is proud of the $7,000,000
capital project, which was completed on time
and debt free. In October 2006, the book,
The Miracle on the Mile will be unveiled commemorating
the great community of supporters who financed
and backed with the capital project.

Under the stewardship of Barbara Stein, Actors’
Playhouse has grown into an award- winning
organization with a national reputation producing
a six-show Mainstage and 5-show Children’s
Theatre season, a Theatre Conservatory, an
annual National Children’s Theatre Festival,
while also managing the Miracle Theatre for
rentals to outside groups. The theatre is
regarded as a South Florida musical theatre
powerhouse with its seven Carbonell Awards
in 2006 including “Best Production of
a Musical,” for Elton John and Tim Rice’s
Aida.
Stein works with a team of talented artistic
staff and dedicated support staff to achieve
her goals. In addition she works tirelessly
with her husband, a practicing dentist who
is Chairman of the Board, along with a devoted
Board of Directors and active Advisory Board.
Barbara plans on expanding upon the fiscally
sound organization for the future of Actors’
Playhouse by embarking on a planned giving
program to increase the endowment fund.
Active in a gamete of civic organizations
including Trustee member of the Coral Gables
and ChamberSouth Chambers, member of the Greater
Miami Chamber, the Greater Miami Convention
and Visitors Bureau, the Coral Gables Rotary
Club, and the University of Pennsylvania Dade
Alumnae Club, Stein considers her leadership
experiences to be the impetus for her success.
Stein says, “Hard work, sincerity, and
follow through are my guidelines for building
my friendships and relationships. My business
partners are now my life-long friends.”
Stein has been acknowledged as one of 65 “Florida
Women of Achievement” in an annual photographic
exhibit for Woman’s History Month, named “Marketer
of the Year”, by the Dade County Branch of the
American Marketing Association, received the Coral
Gables Chamber “Diamond Award” for business
excellence and was named the “2006 Coral Gables
Chamber Corporate Business Woman of the Year.”
Stein was also recognized with the Greater Miami Region
of Hadassah’s “Women Who Make The Difference”
Award, and the American Red Cross “Spectrum
Award for Culture.” In 2004, the Steins received
the “Ruth Foreman Award” at the 29th Carbonell
Ceremony for their “development of Actors’
Playhouse, saving a historic site, and for nourishing
the arts in South Florida.” Barbara’s
most important achievement is her two daughters, Elaine
Stein of New York General Council of TBWA Worldwide,
and Stephanie Stein of Los Angeles, President of Swivel
Industries.
