Mainstage Theatre:
Actors’ Playhouse produces six Mainstage productions
each year featuring musicals, including large-scale
Broadway productions. We produce our shows with
Equity union actors in an agreement with Actors’
Equity Association New York, the union of professional
actors. Our reputation has recently earned us six
Carbonell Awards (South Florida Tony Awards) for
Les Misérables
including Best Producer of a Musical and Best Director.
We will open our 2010-2011 season in October with
the World Premiere play The Color Of
Desire by Pulitzer Prize author Nilo
Cruz, followed by the Tony Broadway musical Oliver!
for the holidays. In January, we will produce the
South Florida Regional Premiere of The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
In March/April we proudly announce the South Florida
regional rights for Tracy Letts’s 2008 Tony
and Pultizer Prize play, August: Osage
County, and in May we will present
the Tony Award play Alfred Hitchcock’s
The 39 Steps, which is
currently still playing in New York. The summer
musical is still in negotiation.

The Musical Theatre for Young Audiences series,
featuring musical plays for children presented by
professional adult actors, serves more than 50,000
children each year. A free ticket program for minority
and disadvantaged children benefits 7,000 children
who would not otherwise have a chance to experience
live theatre. Next year’s productions will
feature King Midas & His Friends,
A Christmas Carol, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible,
No Good Very Bad Day, Madeline & the Gypsies,
and a new musical for our 16th Annual

The
16th Annual National Children’s Theatre Festival:
Now in its sixteenth year, our festival continues
to bring South Florida families a celebration of
multicultural theatrical presentations, hands-on
activities, theatre workshops in acting and design,
and an opportunity to meet the authors of a new
musical chosen from our national call to competition.
It is one of the few competitions that encourages
playwrights and composers to write new works for
children. The festival also provides cultural tourism
benefits by attracting children’s theatre
fans to Miami from all over the country and abroad.
The winning musical is part of our annual children’s
season. During the opening weekend of the new musical,
we present a weekend family event with two days
of cultural programming and hands-on activities
for children, including the presentation of the
new work.

Educational
Outreach:
Partnerships with Miami-Dade public schools provide
educational resources for students and teachers,
including educator workshops, extensive study guides,
theatre field trips, backstage dialogues with actors
and other theatre professionals, and programs in
which theatre techniques are used to help children
develop self-confidence, effective communications,
and a better understanding of life’s skills
in general. Actors’ Playhouse also sponsors
the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Disabilities
annual talent show by providing our director and
technical support for the event. In addition, our
Musical Miracles Youth Performance Troupe rehearses
and performs with the challenged youth in the city
program to create a show. This experience enhances
positive attitudes and an understanding of how individuals
can work together to overcome difficulties.
Our programs
for at-risk students give special attention to middle
and high school students who have experienced drugs,
gangs and other high-stress teen issues. Participating
young people attend free performances of productions
based on themes relating to social issues, followed
by frank discussions of these issues with classmates
and theatre professionals. Other performance-related
activities provide opportunities for practical learning
in acting, music, choreography, set design and related
fields, guiding students to potential employment
and enhanced self-awareness. Actors’ Playhouse
staff members also conduct in-school programs, working
with young people throughout the school year. We
are pleased to collaborate with our sponsoring partners
to develop outreach programs with agencies that
they also support.

Actors’
Playhouse Theatre Conservatory:
The conservatory hosts a year-round schedule of
courses and workshops in subjects such as acting,
script writing, stage and camera techniques, speech,
movement and vocal technique. Experienced professionals
teach programs for children, teenagers and adults.
Classes are limited in size to offer the maximum
development with a planned curriculum to guide individuals
through many years of training. Our popular summer
camp attracts over 100 children each year in two
independent sessions, as does our Summer Teen One
Act Showcase. Performance and technical internships
are offered in partnership with Miami-Dade Public
Schools, the New World School of the Arts, the University
of Miami Communications and Business Schools and
the Musical Theatre Degree program through the Music
School, and Florida International University, providing
students the opportunity to gain first-hand experience
and credentials in professional theatre in both
administrative and artistic theatre. University
of Miami Musical Theatre Degree students audition
and perform in ensembles of our large musicals for
class credit and for points towards their union
card, which is essential to have for New York auditions.

The
Musical Miracles:
This group is a talented troupe of youth who audition
to be part of a year-round intensive musical training
program under the direction of our Children’s
Theatre Director. The children gain experience-developing
careers in musical theatre, admittance into magnet
schools, casting in television commercials, and
as performers in productions demanding youth actors
at Actors’ Playhouse. From this experience,
individuals have wholesome experiences in addition
to gaining self-confidence, artistic skills team
playing skills, and a full understanding of professional
theatre. Many of these individuals have returned
to perform with us and have won Carbonell Awards
for their talent in Mainstage productions. Others
are performing in national road tours and on Broadway.
We are a one-of-a-kind experience in the regional
theatre for young actors, with some of the talent
traveling as far as 60 miles to be cast in our productions.
Each year the Musical Miracle troupe presents a
fully mounted and costumed musical presentation
as part of our theatre festival activities.

20th Annual Reach for the Stars Gala Auction April
16, 2011:

and tourist-related industries, over $300,000 of
items is contributed to the theatre, and 30 of the
area’s best restaurants provide tasting stations
for 600 guests. Hosted for 19 years by former CBS
broadcaster Bob Soper, we traditionally raise approximately
